Horizontal gene transfer of [P.sub.IB]-type ATPases among bacteria isolated from radionuclide- and metal-contaminated subsurface soils
Article Abstract:
The extent of horizontally transferred [P.sub.IB]-type ATPases in bacterial isolates cultured from subsurface soils with a history of radionuclide and heavy metal contamination is examined. The results have shown that dissemination of [P.sub.IB]-type ATPases by horizontal gene transfer (HGT) has occurred among isolates representing the Actinobacteria, Firmicutes and Proteobacteria phyla present in metal- and radionuclide-contaminated soils of the Field Research Centre (FRC).

Identification of members of the metabolically active microbial populations associated with Beggiatoa species mat communities from Gulf of Mexico cold-seep sediments
Article Abstract:
The composition of the metabolically active fraction of the microbial community occurring in Gulf of Mexico marine sediments with overlying filamentous bacterial mats (like Beggiatoa species) is determined. This is the first phylogenetics-based evaluation of the presumptive metabolically active fraction of the Bacteria and Archaea community structure examined along a sediment depth profile in the northern Gulf of Mexico, a hydrogen-rich cold-seep region.

Characterization of microbial community structure in Gulf of Mexico gas hydrates
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted in which the composition of the Bacteria and Archaea communities was determined by 16S rRNA phylogenetic analyses of clone libraries derived from RNA and DNA extracted from sediment-entrained hydrate (SEH) and interior hydrate (IH). The study was the first phylogenetic analysis of the metabolically active fraction of the microbial community extant in the distinct SEH and IH layers of GoM gas hydrate.
